questions about whirlwood and my wands

All Whirlwood Wands are made from Hard Maplewood.

Why do you use mostly hard maplewood for your wands?

I use hard maplewood for several reasons. It is beautiful, it carves great, it is very strong, it has wonderful magical qualities, and it is abundant. Using hard maplewood does not require cutting down endangered trees as does the “exotic woods” used in some wands.

  Do your wands break?

Never. Well, twice (falling pianos). Almost all of my wands are made from one piece of hand-picked hard maplewood. Other wandmakers have a box of handles and a box of dowels made overseas on machines, that they glue together. The joint is near the middle of the length of the wand and is a weak point. These wands are very easy to break. Wands of two or more pieces are obviously necessary when different woods are combined, and for these wands, the woods need to be hardwood and the joints should be deep and well made. If you choose another wand maker, make sure the wand is a one-piece wand.

  Can you use other woods?

I make custom wands for my patrons and, if it can be found, I use the wood that they desire.

Can I order by mail and pay by check or money order?

Yes, of course. Simply mail a check or money order to:

  Do you gift wrap?

My wands come in a very handsome, hand-made wand boxes (which can be seen by viewing the Storyteller Wands or the Finest Wands pages (scroll to the bottom of the page). Each wand box arrives packed snugly inside a hand-made, hand-stamped matching shipping sleeve. It is an unusual and interesting presentation. I can stamp any instructions on the wand box that you would like; for example, “Do Not Open Until Christmas” or “Merlin, please wait until your birthday to open.” Or I can stamp these instruction on the outside shipping sleeve to forestall revealing the contents until the date you desire. I customize your order to your specifications. Simply email me at information@whirlwood.com or contact me by mail or telephone. I will work with you to make sure your gift arrives as you wish. Whirlwood Magic Wands make very beautiful, interesting, and thoughtful gifts.
